MCBI Rally
of the Sun & Stars
It is a bit embarrassing to admit, but we were possibly the
least prepared we have ever been for rally. I have been
extremely busy at work and had little time to devote to the
car, ditto with Jackie and the pace-notes. So much so that I
did the pace-notes late one night by myself. There were two
minor things to resolve on the car prior to the start of the
rally. One was the battery box which was loose, the other
was the horn. Both were fixed the night before the start,
and the front tyres were changed.
The rally was set to start at 2:45pm on Saturday with 4 runs
through Darkhole and then 4 runs on the Todds to Featherbed
Lane stage, finishing at the Gymnasium with a super special.
The first Darkhole run was wet from the start to about
halfway up the hill, and was very much a handful on the Toyo
888 tyres. By the time we were ready to start the second run
the road was basically dry. We had a bit of a moment when
cutting the lefthander by the old plantation building when
the left rear wheel hit a lump/bump/rock or something hidden
in the grass and launched the back of the car in the air.
The third run was also eventful due to a way too late
braking stunt on the finish line that resulted in an almost
spin and skid to a halt. The fourth run was cancelled and it
was on to the Todds stage.
This stage went well until arriving at the finish on the
third run (fourth run was cancelled) and I realised that the
gearbox mount had broken. Fortunately this stage was not far
from home, and I drove there carefully trying not to make
any sudden throttle changes. On arrival the engine was
jacked up to line back up the broken mount, and then mig
welded. In the interests of time, or lack thereof, I welded
only what I could reach without unbolting the mount from the
gearbox which was the 2 long sides. The theory here was that
is having 4 sides welded survived 2 years, then 2 sides
could survive 1 super special. And survive it did. The
superspecial around the Gymnasium was great fun. A couple of
long straights, some 90 degree corners and some spins around
plastic drums with thousands of fans looking on. At the end
of the day we finished first in class. All in all a very
enjoyable rally with a different format.

MCBI Speed
Event - Stewarts Hill
After the overheating issue with the car during RB07, and
having checked a variety of things on the car as well as
having increased the fuelling, I decided as a last resort on
Saturday afternoon to re-torque the head since the problem
was very symptomatic of a blown or leaking head gasket. When
pulling the last bolt, it suddenly made a cracking noise and
went slack. I thought I had snapped the bolt, but it came
out whole. The threads in the block had stripped. While
examining it, another bolt literally jumped out of the head
and landed on the floor. No more activity for this engine
then.
So, with the event looming the following morning, the only
choice was to put the standard engine back in the car. A
quick phone call to Michael (aka Barefoot Rastaman) and
disassembly began in earnest. We were aiming for midnight,
but a few hiccups meant that we did not finish until around
3:30am.
A few hours kip, and up at 7:30am and off to the event.
The car worked very well, and I surprised myself with a best
time of 2:08.23
This was 3 seconds quicker than our best time in RB07, and
with the standard engine.
The rear
brake bias valve
was also installed shortly before Stewart Hill, so the car
was braking much better, and this must have helped.

Carnival Warm-Up Tarmac Rally
We had made a decision to run the Toyo R888 tyres for this
year instead of the trusty RA-1's, and this rally would be
the testing ground. On SS1 (Stewart Hill) we were
confortably ahead of our group, and about 5 seconds behind
the 206 of Ian Warren and the MK2 Escort of Mark Hamilton -
pretty much where I expected to be without driving like a
looney. The tyres felt good, but could probably have
benefited from a bit more scrubbing in. The time on SS2 was
similar, the tyres again coping well with what is
predominantly a fast flowing course on a very smooth
surface. We went 4 seconds quicker on SS3 (repeat of SS1)
due mainly to catching sight of Ian Warren about 2/3rds of
the way through the stage, and then trying our darndest to
catch him before the finish. He had been forced to slow down
due to an unknown vibration on his car.SS4 was quite
dramatic. We punctured the left rear tyre after cutting a
square left, but were unaware of this at the time. The next
corner was a 6th gear flat right maybe! I kept the car on
the road, but it did take me by surprise, especially since
on the first run through the stage there was no hint of
movement. I was still unaware that the tyre was flat,
attributing the moment to dirt/oil/debris/heat in the road.
Next up was a tight chicane taken in 2nd gear. This I knew
something was wrong, but still couldn't quite pin down what.

Out of the chicane, into 3rd then hard on the brakes and
back to 2nd for a wide square right and bingo. Full
sideways, full opposite lock, full throttle and all sorts of
screeching rubber noises confirmed the flat left rear.

The
remaining half of the stage was taken very gingerly indeed
and we ended 11 seconds slower than the first run through.
We backed off a bit for the remaining stages of the day,
reaching the superspecial at Bushy Park circuit with a
comfortable lead in the group. We gave it some decent welly
and were rewarded with 6th fastest overall. Final result was
1st in class and 10th overall.

2007 Vauclause Race Meet #2
Vaucluse was a most enjoyable event. After having run the
rallychase a few weeks prior and experienced the very
dusty conditions, and needing to regroove some part-worn
RA-1's for the event, I decided on a wider, deeper groove
on every other thread, similar to some of the aggressive
wet patterns seen around. It seemed to have done the
job. The start/finsh straight had been sealed and coated
with a layer of sand that made it very slippery. The track
was back in the rallysprint layout, and having driven the
rallychase format just recently, it now seemed terribly
narrow all of a sudden. I took the first run somewhat
cautiously, and noted that the northern and southern
sweeping clay bends were very similar to last time - very
dusty with reasonable grip. The northern hairpin was quite
slippery as was the transition from grass to colass after
going under the bridge. I was paired with Freddie Gale
(Toyota RunX) on each of 3 qualifying runs and, in spite
of finishing ahead of him on each run I was unsure of
where I was in the class since Greg Cozier (Ford Escort)
would usually be breathing down my neck. I took a
passenger around for the second run - James Betts navi on
the recent rally in Trinidad - and had a bit of a moment
coming through the finish very sideways on the inside
track. As it turns out I had the quickest time in
the group in the qualifying session and won the group in
the elimination round and was into the handicap runoffs.
First was against Spencer
Hutchinson (306 GT6), setting off 15 seconds behind him. I
had a good clean run, beating Spencer to the line and was
into the final, this time against Sean Gill and the Swift.
I had a 5 second start on him, and drove just a little bit
too hard. I got way out of line on the outer track on the
right before the bridge, but I don't think I lost much
there. One the second half of the circuit, I carried too
much speed into the left after the start/finish line and
ended up with the rightside wheels on the rough stuff on
the inside the the righthander. Again not much time lost,
but I was mentally kicking myself for that and wondering
how much I was going to loose by. After making the
outside southern hairpin, there was no telltale dust
hanging in the air to indicate a Suzuki had left the
scene, and I basically had to keep it tidy through to the
finish to stay ahead. So said, so done, and clinched the
handicap knockout final. A very satisfying result on a day
with variable and challenging conditions.
